Councillors adopted a new version of the Darebin 2041 Community Vision (statement and pillars) at their 24 February meeting; an update which introduces a fourth “vision pillar” titled “Collaborative, Transparent and Responsible”.

The reshaped document, first adopted in 2021, was developed in consultation with the Our Darebin Deliberative Panel – a community body designed to proportionally represent different demographics in the area.

Broader community engagement was also sought, with council officers estimating 3,500 people were reached over the last six months.

The three existing pillars were modified too: transport goals have shifted focus from sustainability to accessibility, while environmental goals were expanded to be more proactive in responding to climate change.

Mention of Traditional Owner knowledge was also added to sustainability goals.

Through its research, the panel identified six “core community priorities” to inform the council’s focus over the next four years. Those were:

  • “cost of living and economic security”,
  • “mental health support and services”,
  • “climate emergency response”,
  • “inclusion and accessibility to create ‘One Darebin'”,
  • “community building and involvement”, and
  • “green space and recreation.”
